Lucy completed the 5th grade, but her family could no longer afford to pay the cost of her education. Her father suffers from poor health and is unable to help support his wife and their four children. In 2002, her familiy moved in with relatives to find food and shelter, and an aunt paid her education costs. But due to the recent prolonged drought in Kenya, the relatives are no longer able to support both families. Her mother has no source of income.

When she was 12 years old, her father had arranged her marriage, but she ran away to her school. She was unable to return home, as her father vowed he would marry her off if she returned.
