The Maasai Girls Education Fund was
created to improve the literacy, health, and economic well-being
of Maasai women in Kenya through education.
To achieve is mission, the organization
is committed to educating a generation of Maasai girls.
Through this effort, the next generation of Maasai women
will have an opportunity for economic independence, which
will enable them to educate subsequent generations themselves.
MGEF provides scholarships for
girls who would otherwise never go to school and those
who would have to end their education early for cultural
or economic reasons. MGEF is committed to the complete education
of each student, whether through secondary school, vocational
school, or college.
MGEF also sponsors:
- life skills workshops for
students,
- practical skills workshops
for rural Maasai women, and
- HIV/AIDS education workshops
for the community.
These workshops are fundamental to
the success of MGEF's mission to educate a generation of
Maasai women.
The Maasai
Girls Education Fund is currently supporting the education
of more than 50 Maasai girls from the Kajiado District of
Kenya from primary school to college. MGEF is proud
to recognize the 16 students who maintained an A average
for the 2004 school year.
The MGEF
model works because it was built in partnership with
the community, and incorporates the social structure
of the Maasai culture.
